Meet the man behind Miami's chart-topping mac 'n' cheese beloved by Pitbull, ASAP Rocky and Dwyane Wade

Beyond the food, "Teach" explained "we're an experience with the food, the music, the ambiance and the vibes -- so now maybe you can't make it to us but we can make it to you and I think that's brought people a lot of comfort." And now, "we are looking into ghost kitchens," he added of the highly popular concept in the restaurant industry that utilizes commercial kitchen spaces to fulfill food orders without a physical storefront. "I like to think of it as a micro-franchise. It's alleviating a lot of risks because it's an easy way to expand without as much overhead," he said. Food and music can not only evoke specific feelings and memories transcending generations and social divides -- but both can provide comfort in tough times.

Los Angeles County, as the employer, knew or should have known that Mac Hall staff members were a risk to the residents at the facility. Mortgage rates remained steady in March and averaged 6.8% for the month, as measured by Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey®. According to the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), mortgage activity increased over the month despite these higher rates. Overall mortgage activity was up 3.9% month-overmonth but was down by 10.2% year-over-year at the end of March. Refinance activity for March was up 5.9% as compared to February, and purchase applications were up 3.2% month-over-month.

For sexual abuse lawsuits, proving that the defendant or defendants are liable for your injuries lies in establishing negligence. For sexual abuse victims at MacLaren Hall, the most promising is negligent hiring and supervision.

Los Angeles County, the state of California, and board members of MacLaren Hall were named defendants in the lawsuit. We know that no amount of money can make up for the abuse inflicted on you as a child. However, any damages awarded from this lawsuit can make your life more comfortable and allow you to find treatment and support to heal from the abuse.

Recently, survivors began launching their own cases to speak out about the injustices they had suffered. "They were basically my test kitchen to see how people responded to it. And my peers, people like Flo-Rida and ASAP Rocky and others with influence would try my food," he said. "The mac and cheese was always the first thing to run out from the whole spread."

Since we do not expect mortgage rates to fall significantly this year, refinance activity will remain constrained, keeping total originations low for 2024. Overall, housing demand is making a healthy recovery compared to last year. First-ime homebuyers continue to carry demand so far this year as they make up almost 6 out of 10 purchase applications. Nonetheless, the median payment (principal and interest) is up 7% from the same period last year, and that continues to be a significant headwind as affordability remains near historic lows. Purchase demand is improving, but with mortgage rates still averaging 6.8%, many prospective homebuyers are being priced out of the housing market. MacLaren Hall (now known as Maclaren Children’s Center) was a children’s residential care center in Los Angeles County that closed in 2003.

The intent of punitive damages is to punish the defendant for their wrongful conduct and discourage others from committing the same or similar acts. Unfortunately, for decades up to the 1970s, the county probation department ran Mac Hall and operated it the same way they operated the prisons. Mac Hall had a 14-foot chain-link fence topped with five feet of barbed wire, with floodlights everywhere. "I've gotten so much support from my friends and peers and that's the biggest thing they could do to help me. It's bigger than money. Everybody you see on the walls it's always been organic," Turton said. "So many people that have been by and supported my establishment. It has been priceless."

Our sexual abuse attorneys will demonstrate that your suffering would not have happened if the defendants had upheld their duty of care and taken reasonable steps to prevent abuse. A sexual abuse attorney can help you gather the necessary evidence for a successful claim. Until 1976, MacLaren Hall was run and managed by the Los Angeles County Probation Department. Although touted as a safe place for neglected children, MacLaren Hall felt more like a prison to residents because it operated similarly.

However, subdued home sales will limit the purchase origination dollar volumes. Additionally, a high share of cash purchases will also impede purchase origination volumes. On the refinance side, unless the mortgage rates drop significantly and unlock rate-locked homeowners, refinance volumes will remain low.

Employment for January and February was revised up by a combined 22,000. The unemployment rate inched down from 3.9% in February to 3.8% in March, with decreases in Asian and Hispanic unemployment rate over the month. Unemployment remains below 4% for the 26th consecutive month, the longest streak since the 1960s. Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose 0.3% month-over-month, and compared to a year ago, average hourly earnings increased 4.1%. Overall, the jobs report is indicative of a resilient labor market signaling the likelihood of continued support for consumption spending and thereby, for economic growth.

Then came the brick-and-mortar locations spanning from Miami to Orlando, offering dine-in, takeout, and delivery. Now the owner of House of Mac, a Miami- and Orlando-based fast-casual concept serving cheesy comfort food, Turton attended culinary school right after high school. But when his first restaurant job soured him on the industry, a friend helped him get a gig as a club promoter, which then turned into promoting records, and eventually led to managing artists. For the next 14 years, Turton traveled the world managing big names like Lil Jon, Yo Gotti, A$AP Rocky, and Mr. 305 himself — Pitbull.

The FHFA Purchase-Only Home Price Index for January ticked down by 0.1% month-over-month compared to an increase of 0.1% in December 2023. However, with housing demand on the rebound, year-over-year, house price growth remained strong at 6.3% for January. It extends the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to file a civil lawsuit against the perpetrator of the abuse and other responsible parties.

The 2023 spring homebuying season was indeed sluggish, as a large number of homebuyers sifted through tight housing markets within the high-rate, low-inventory environment. According to data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and the U.S. Census Bureau, 2023 had the lowest total home sales for the spring season (March through June) since 2011 (Exhibit 2). Looking at our unique, real-time Loan Product Advisor® (LPA) data, we can get an early pulse of where the housing market is headed. In the mortgage market, we expect to see some increase in dollar volumes of mortgage origination in 2024 largely driven by higher home prices.

Mac Hall had become a dangerous and traumatizing place instead of the sanctuary it had originally promised. While Turton has opened several locations, he also understands the stress and tough decision-making behind closing or modifying locations, particularly in the wake of COVID-19 and a looming recession. Recently, his flagship location in Wynwood went from a full-service restaurant to a ghost kitchen concept. But running a multi-location restaurant brand isn’t all recipe testing and experimentation. Turton compares his trajectory on the business side of things to the popular “what people think success looks like vs what it really looks like” meme. Below, listed in no particular order, you'll find everything from humble mom-and-pop places to straight-up, once-in-a-blue-moon splurges.

Instead, it closed in disgrace in 2003, and some of its former residents have been speaking out about sexual abuse at the facility. Of course, the main focus at House of Mac is the macaroni and cheese, which is available in over a dozen variations like five cheese truffle, jerk chicken, and Philly cheesesteak. Quickly after, one truck turned into two and Turton’s comfort food became well known throughout South Florida as he served heaping orders of his inventive macaroni and cheese out of the side of his bright yellow truck.

If you experienced sexual abuse, consult with a lawyer to examine the facts of your case and determine whether filing your sexual abuse claim is still an option. With the California Child Victims Act (the “lookback” window), you are eligible to file a claim through December 31, 2022. Since this deadline is quickly approaching, it is in your best interests to contact a personal injury lawyer accepting MacLaren Hall sexual abuse clients immediately. Despite the month-over-month gains, existing sales are still 3.3% below the levels of February 2023. New home sales for February 2024 were at 662,000, 0.3% below January sales, but 5.9% higher than last February. As the supply of existing homes for sale remains low and home prices continue to rise, more buyers are choosing to purchase new homes than in previous years. The labor market remained robust with nonfarm payroll employment increasing by 303,000 in March 2024, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

However, some markets that led demand in previous years (e.g. Florida and Arizona) appear to be moderating, implying that the rate lock-in effect and high home prices are starting to take their toll on these hot markets (Exhibit 5). However, as inflation remains a fundamental piece in halting the Federal Reserve’s rate cuts, risks are weighted to the downside. Consumers have started to feel the brunt of high rates as indicated by deteriorating credit performance, particularly in auto and credit card segments. In the absence of rate cuts, the weakening in non-mortgage performance will continue and might spill over to mortgage performance. Leading up to the spring homebuying season, total (existing + new) home sales for the month of February 2024 moved up by 8.1% from January 2024, but were down 2.2% from a year ago. Existing home sales grew 9.5% from January to 4.38 million in February and accounted for about 87% of total home sales.

In June 2022, an additional 31 victims came forward and joined the civil lawsuit that was filed in the previous month. The complaint alleges that MacLaren Hall was overcrowded, understaffed, and poorly maintained, and that children were overmedicated, restrained, sexually assaulted, and taunted. Under California law, if you were a child when the sexual abuse at Mac Hall happened, you have until the age of 40 to sue Los Angeles County for the harm you suffered.

More recently, former residents of MacLaren Hall have come forward and disclosed the childhood sexual abuse they endured from MacLaren Hall staff members. Mac Hall opened its doors in the 1940s with the intent to house non-delinquent minors and keep them separated from other children who were guilty or accused of crimes. By the 1960s, that purpose had changed; Mac Hall now also included children from the county juvenile hall due to overcrowding and had grown to house over 4,000 children a year. Located in Los Angeles County, MacLaren Hall, also called Mac Hall, was supposed to be a haven for unwanted, abused, and abandoned children.

They are more aesthetically pleasing than straight stairs, are easier to navigate, and the bend offers some privacy between barriers. They are more complex and expensive to build than straight stairs because they require a support structure. A few great options include painting them, adding lighting, or replacing the railing.

The beauty of a barn-style staircase lies in its imperfections—every knot, grain, and color variation in the wood tells a story.

With the landing half-way up the flight, they make it possible for individuals with mobility or breathing problems to rest when going up or down. However, like L-shaped stairs, a center support is necessary to support winder stairs, which can make installation more expensive and complex. The odd-shaped triangle steps can also be more challenging to navigate for some users than a flat landing. The triangular steps along the turn make winder stairs a more attractive option in the eyes of many homeowners, adding a modern touch to a living space.

In addition to these song meaning articles, Ed has written our “Year in Music 1960s-1990s” articles. But the legacy of the song continues mainly through its status as a must-play on DJ's standard party set-lists from Birmingham to Boise. But according to Bailey and Commodores frontman Lionel Richie, it all began with an idea Commodores drummer Walter 'Clyde' Orange brought into the studio that charmed day. In a 1996 interview with a Swedish news outlet, Richie credited Orange with writing "most of the lyrics and most of the melody to" the track. As of 2021, “Brick House” remains one of the most recognizable funk songs of all time. Its infectious groove has been used in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials, cementing its place in popular culture.

The song went through further tweaks and mastering by engineers and Motown whizzes after that first session, but the band recorded all the main parts that day in Tuskegee, Bailey added. "Brick House" went on to be band's most commercial hit, peaking at #5 on the U.S. charts, but achieving a staying power that would impress even late soul crooner Barry White. Easy pretty much marked the end of funk as they’d played it, as the group worked the Three Times A Lady “Quiet Storm” vein for subsequent hits. Brick House rose from the dead one mo’ time in 2003 when Richie recorded a new version with Rob Zombie for (are you ready for this?) the soundtrack to Zombie’s horror flick, House Of 1000 Corpses. The Commodores’ two highest charting singles of 1977 were drawn from the same album, and represented the two contrasting sounds of the group. Easy looked forward to hits dominated by the smooth crooning of Lionel Richie while Brick House captured the fiery rhythms of their early records and live shows.

The song's popularity even spawned a beauty contest of sorts that followed the Commodores as they travelled the globe giving concerts. The band would choose a lucky winner at each tour stop, who would henceforth be named the Miss Brickhouse of that locale. At its core, “Brick House” is a celebration of Black women’s beauty and a rejection of Eurocentric beauty standards.

Brickhouse gained immense popularity due to its infectious rhythm, catchy lyrics, and the Commodores’ exceptional musical talent. The song’s fusion of funk, soul, and R&B elements created a unique and unforgettable sound that resonated with audiences worldwide. Additionally, its empowering message of self-acceptance struck a chord with listeners and established Brickhouse as a timeless anthem. Brickhouse carries significant cultural importance by promoting body positivity and self-acceptance.

Brick House was the last song recorded for the Commodores album, and released after Easy. Yet, it was Easy – along with the success of Sweet Love and Just To Be Close To You in 1976 – that showed where the group was heading. Geffen Records made history on June 27, 1994 when Aerosmith's "Head First" became the first major label song made available for exclusive digital download. Download speeds at the time were so slow it took around 75 minutes to download the track.

Brickhouse explores themes of self-confidence, body positivity, individuality, and the celebration of uniqueness. The song sends a powerful message that inner beauty and true confidence come from accepting oneself as they are, regardless of societal standards or norms. The song’s title, “Brickhouse,” is a metaphorical representation of a strong, confident, and attractive person. It compares the resilience and sturdiness of a brick house to the unwavering self-assurance and attractiveness of an individual. The Commodores use this metaphor to convey the idea that true beauty is not defined by societal beauty standards but is found in embracing uniqueness and authenticity. This odd yet evocative four-word string, backed by one of popular music's funkiest basslines, has long been ingrained deep in the psyche of even casual listeners.

Music, Songs & Lyrics

The song challenges societal beauty standards and encourages listeners to embrace their uniqueness. Its empowering message resonates across generations, inspiring individuals to celebrate their individuality and find strength in their own skin. The song’s message of empowerment for Black women continues to resonate with fans of all backgrounds. Brick House Lyrics

Written by Commodores band members Lionel Richie, Ronald LaPread, Walter “Clyde” Orange, and Milan Williams, the lyrics praise a woman who defies stereotypes with her curvy figure and unapologetic attitude. I got my first record at age two and never looked back, spending a decades-long career in radio and the music business. Even after years of reading about and listening to all types of music, I am still fascinated by it. Apart from that, I’m endlessly intrigued by art, nature, and the inner lives of people (and dogs). The song features powerful horns, tight rhythm guitar, and a memorable bassline that has been sampled by countless other artists over the years. The track’s energy and syncopation are a testament to the band’s skills as musicians, and it’s no surprise that it catapulted them to mainstream success soon after its release. The song’s message of empowerment and pride in Black female beauty is emblematic of the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and 70s.

This is one of those phrases that started off as incredibly rude, and through sheer repetition (and dropping one key word) turned into a compliment. See, the original expression, from early 1900s slang, was built like a brick shithouse. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation. Despite the rise to ubiquity of the classic tune, the story of its creation is a humble one that serves as a reminder of the power of creativity, musical chemistry and hard work, with a heaping serving of swagger. Old Time Music is proud to have such a passionate and talented team of writers who share their love for music with our readers. "And they sure enough did because that was the biggest commercial song ever been done by the Commodores, 'Brick House.' All that, right here in this building. This is where the magic happened." Surprise exits, a catfight and some very memorable performances make our list of the most memorable Idol moments.

Charlotte was established in the LA punk scene when a freaky girl named Belinda approached her wearing a garbage bag. The first US Top 10 hit with the word "hell" in the title was "Gives You Hell" by The All-American Rejects in 2008. The Commodores drew inspiration for Brickhouse from the experiences and emotions they encountered during their rise to fame.

It reflects the band’s personal journey of embracing their individuality and celebrating their success, urging listeners to do the same. The song Brickhouse was written by the members of the Commodores, primarily William “Smokey” Robinson, Ronald LaPread, and Walter Orange. These talented musicians co-wrote the track, infusing it with their creativity and musical prowess. The advice to live each day to its fullest can seem like a cliché, but figuring out how to actually do that can be pretty challenging.

The song’s popularity amongst African American audiences further cemented its place as a funk classic that has stood the test of time. Brickhouse played a pivotal role in shaping the funk genre, becoming a blueprint for future funk compositions. Its infectious bassline and energetic horns became signature elements of the genre. The song’s success paved the way for other funk artists and solidified the Commodores’ status as pioneers of funk music.

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett review an irresistible modern fairytale Fiction

the dutch house

The words Dutch and house have the same number of letters; I knew it would look really good. It’s a book about wealth and poverty, and the sort of whiplash of going back and forth between those two states. It didn’t quite bring the story to a satisfying conclusion for me, but it’s such a well-written and engrossing family drama that I enjoyed it very much anyway.

Book Excerpt

the dutch house

In 1963, Cyril dies of a heart attack, and Andrea inherits everything except for an educational trust for the children. Andrea forces Danny to leave the house two weeks after Cyril’s death, forcing Maeve to raise him. Eager to get what little revenge she can by draining the educational trust, Maeve compels Danny to go to an expensive boarding school, pre-med at Columbia, and medical school. Patchett's previous novel, Commonwealth (2016), was her most autobiographical, and it also involved blended families and children left too much to their own devices.

During this time the two reminisce about their childhoods. When they are in their 40s they finally see Andrea outside the house and realize that they are preoccupied with the past and decide to stop coming to the Dutch House. A few years later Maeve has a heart attack and to Danny and Maeve's surprise their mother, Elna, returns to nurse Maeve. Danny is still angry at his mother, whom he has no memories of, but Maeve is reinvigorated by her presence.

The greatest lack I think in my body of work, if, God forbid, you were to read it all, is that I don’t write villains. I have this shortcoming that whenever I get too close to anybody, I become sympathetic to them. That was why I wrote this book in first person, because all Danny knows is what Andrea chooses to show him. This would also be a fantastic book for book clubs to debate over the ending and discuss whether it makes them think about the roles they’ve cast the people in their lives into.

Though Danny is financially successful Celeste grows increasingly bitter that he never used his medical degree and puts the blame for the strain of their marriage on Maeve. Danny pursues an on-again, off-again relationship with local girl Celeste Norcross, adds to his real estate holdings, and in 1977 marries Celeste. In the space of two years, Danny and Celeste have two children (May and Kevin). Danny completes medical school but decides to continue building his real estate business, which grows substantially during the 1980s. Shortly after this episode and seeing Andrea on the front lawn of the Dutch House, the siblings decide to stop surreptitiously visiting the Dutch House because they want to move on from the past.

Fluffy becomes their nanny, and Sandy and Jocelyn are a part of their lives, too. Maeve and Danny still stake out the Dutch House, but mostly out of nostalgia. One night after almost being seen by Andrea, they agree it's time to stop visiting. In The Dutch House, Maeve and Danny are siblings who grow up in a grand house in Elkins Park.

Elna decides to take care of Andrea out of a sense of charity, a decision that causes a rift with Maeve. By the end of the novel, Danny and Celeste are divorced, and May, who has grown up to be a successful actor, buys the Dutch House. The novel closes with Danny attending a party that May throws at the Dutch House. The Dutch House is the eighth novel of Ann Patchett, an award-winning author of contemporary fiction. Set in the Dutch House—located in the outskirts of Philadelphia—and New York, the novel is literary fiction with fairy-tale elements.

James said that the house of fiction has “not one window, but a million”, depending on who is looking at the scene, and Patchett’s elegantly constructed narrative often reads like a dramatisation of this idea. For years after they are banished from the Dutch House, Maeve and Danny make a ritual of parking outside their former home to watch the comings and goings of Andrea and their stepsisters through its vast windows. “Do you think it’s possible to ever see the past as it actually was? ” asks Danny, now in college, where Maeve forces him to endure years of expensive medical training simply to drain the educational fund that would otherwise devolve to Andrea’s daughters.

When Cyril dies of a heart attack while inspecting a building site, and with Maeve already at college, Andrea ejects Danny from the house and into his sister’s care, having already sewn up their inheritance. An incensed Maeve persuades Danny to “bilk” the educational trust fund – intended to provide for Andrea’s two daughters too – by applying to the costly medical school at Columbia University. Danny begrudgingly accepts his mother’s late appearance in his life, mostly to appease Maeve, whose heart attack precipitates Elna’s return. The other elements of his life—his successful real estate business, his children (a son, Kevin, and a precocious daughter, May), his lukewarm marriage—fail to command half the attention his sister does. It is tiring to Danny’s wife, Celeste, whose mutual dislike of her sister-in-law occasionally reads like a sitcom trope, adding conflict to work that often functions like a love song. When Maeve refuses Danny’s resentment of their mother, challenging him to “[g]row up,” their argument has all the tension, emotion, and knowingness that Danny and Celeste’s relationship seems to lack.

Their mother decides to stay in the house and nurse Andrea which horrifies Maeve. Elna continues to nurse Andrea and Danny at least partially blames her for his sister's death. Nicely crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with conspicuous buttermilk flavor, these are pancakes prepared just right. It doesn’t hurt that they are served with a side of salted clarified butter that facilitates a solid drenching. This down and dirty family-run restaurant has been serving West LA since 1982.

He learns that his step-sister Norma was forced to become a doctor to compete with Danny and that his younger step-sister, Bright, became estranged from her mother after what she did to the Conroy children. The former household staff return to work at the Dutch House and Danny brings his children for visits where his older daughter May falls in love with the house. Danny Conroy grows up in an elaborate mansion in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania known as the Dutch House, and is raised by his real estate investor father and his older sister Maeve; his mother had abandoned the family years earlier. The family-owned S&W Country Diner operates in Downtown Culver City, and is completely retro with the 1950s-esque counters, decor, and longtime cash-only policy. Its old-school feel even filters through the menu with the pancakes. Four fluffy platter-sized cakes come in one stack, and it might be best to share unless truly hungry.

Though Danny and Maeve had a lonely childhood in the house May uses it to entertain rich and famous celebrities. People are trying to hold up their light, and God love them. But it’s a very, very tough time, and this book definitely came out of the presidential election, and the celebration of wealth, the idea that nothing could be better than being rich.

These are the most pressing challenges in imitating intricate hierarchical patterns and producing nature-inspired materials. As such, natural materials have the capability of self-decomposition and this process does not create an adverse ecological impact. However, artificial materials do not possess the same recyclability, and the pollution caused by plastics is a prime example of human intervention in Nature’s ecosystem. On a triple bottom line (environment, economic, and social aspects), artificial materials are yet to fully adopt green manufacturing routes.

With new advances in fabrication methods, designs can now be made to be more flexible, and manufacturing can be agile and smarter with low waste, thus contributing to sustainability, one of the resolves of nature mimicry. Libonati et al.30 reported a bone-inspired structure on fiber-reinforced composites. Bundles of unidirectional glass fibers (UDGF) were embedded into ±45° carbon fiber (CF) sleeves. The orientation of the UDGF was orthogonal to the main osteon direction, providing a balance in the fiber orientation and ensuring good performance of the whole material in the transverse direction.
